Coming off Pulp Fiction Tarantino was a superstar, a media darling, and an Oscar winning writer. So when he and fellow indie directors Robert Rodriguez, Allison Anders, and Alexandre Rockwell decided to team up for an auteur anthology of four stories in the same hotel, Miramax agreed and the movie was released Christmas of 1995. But the release was small given the names behind it, and it quickly faded into the background. This is ‘The Force Awakens’ trailer

“There were stories about what happened.”

“It’s true. All of it.”

The newest Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer just premiered and promptly blew us all away.

What can you say? It’s glorious, and it does a fantastic job of keeping us clueless with regard to the plot. No doubt everyone who wants to see it has seen it, but here’s the trailer one more time. And just below are some hi-res screen shots provided to Venganza Media by Lucasfilm and Disney. If you have a favorite shot from the trailer, come over to the Now Playing Podcast Facebook page and share it with the rest of us!

Pulp Fiction – for Annual Subscribers

Reservoir Dogs made Quentin Tarantino a press darling and an indie film star, but the question remained if he was a one hit wonder. That question would be answered in 1994 with his second film Pulp Fiction. The movie resurrected the career of John Travolta, while catapulting his co-stars to A-list status. It won Tarantino (and his co-writer) an Academy Award. To many, this is still considered his best film. But is it? Donate to Now Playing to hear this entire review and find out!

Natural Born Killers – for Annual Subscribers

In 1994 Quentin Tarantino’s name was dominating cinema.  Reservoir Dogs had found a huge audience on video. Pulp Fiction won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and movie buffs anxiously awaited for its October wide release. Through self-promotion and film-making, Tarantino was a media darling.

But beating Pulp Fiction to theaters was Natural Born Killers – Oliver Stone’s thesis on the media based on one of Tarantino’s early scripts.  And in 1994 fans had to decide which Tarantino film was their favorite.  Natural Born Killers’ legacy is more controversial, with many real-life killers citing the film as their inspiration.

How does the film hold up over 20 years later? Does its commentary on the media hold up then or now? Listen to the preview, then donate to Now Playing Podcast to find out!

Reservoir Dogs – for Annual Subscribers

Eight bad guys go from breakfast to a bloodbath in Reservoir Dogs. The film set the tone for crime movies in the 1990s and beyond. It also put the spotlight on indie cinema for that decade, opening doors for Robert Rodriguez, Kevin Smith, and other Miramax darlings. Most importantly, though, it introduced the world to writer/director Quentin Tarantino. The first time filmmaker became a critic’s darling with his first movie, and launched an award-winning career that has spanned over two decades. How does his first feature hold up so many years, and so many imitators, later? Donate to Now Playing to find out!

It seemed in 1985 every young man wanted to be a Goonie.  Directed by Superman’s Richard Donner, this Stephen Spielberg produced adventure took from the Indiana Jones formula but starred a group of young teens instead of Harrison Ford.  Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, and Data out to find One Eyed Willie’s treasure and save their houses from foreclosure–if the evil Fratelli family doesn’t kill them first!  This film was a favorite of some Now Playing hosts in the 80s, but does it hold up today or did they just have their bully blinders on?  Donate to Now Playing to find out!

Hasbro’s Star Wars Fans’ Choice Poll — Round 2 Starts Now

HasbroQ&A

Star Wars Action News’ participation in Hasbro’s 2015 Fans’ Choice action figure poll nears completion!

As announced Monday, Hasbro has started a new poll where Star Wars fans and collectors pick which figure is made for the company’s new 6-inch Black Series line of Star Wars figures.

Star Wars Action News was invited to poll their fans on which characters they wanted.  Round 1 was a completely open nomination form, and over 70 different figures were nominated.  Of all the figures requested, the single figure with the most nominations was Ackmena, the singing cantina owner from the notorious Star Wars Holiday Special.  In a close second place was Brea Tonnika — a background character in the cantina from first Star Wars film.

The top 30 nominees have been taken into Round 2 of voting!  Here each Star Wars fan chooses the one figure they want most in 6-inch plastic form.  This second round of voting ends Monday, June 29th, and then the five characters with the most votes will be submitted to Hasbro.

The first 20 characters were picked from the first round of nominations:

Ackmena
Brea Tonnika
Obi-Wan Kenobi (A New Hope)
Admiral Ackbar
ARC Trooper Commander Colt
Gamorrean Guard
Asajj Ventress (Dark Diciple)
Lumpy
Lando Calrissian (Jabba’s Skiff Guard)
Momaw Nadon
Grand Moff Tarkin (A New Hope)
Darth Maul (Robot Legs)
Han Solo (Bespin Outfit)
General Grievous (4-arms)
Ponda Baba
Mara Jade
Sabine
Ephant Mon
Republic Commando
Blue Snaggletooth

The other 51 characters nominated received only 1 vote each, so the Star Wars Action News team, including podcast hosts Arnie and Marjorie Carvalho, reporters Brock, Johnathan Brenner, Justin Kozisek and Steve “The Ginger Prince” Nixon, video editor Andrew Harrison, and photo editors Jay Fazio and Curtis Stevenson.  From the 51 chosen characters the panel selected 10 figures:

Darth Talon
Darth Nihilus
Dexter Jettster
Jaxxon
Watto
Admiral Piett
Lobot
Yak Face
Grand Admiral Thrawn
Amanaman

Which of these 30 characters is your top pick as a new Black Series 6-inch figure?  Vote now in the Star Wars Action News forums!

Hasbro’s Star Wars Fans’ Choice Poll is Back — And Bigger Than Ever!

HasbroQ&A

Once more, fans get to pick an upcoming character in the Star Wars line of figures.

Hasbro announced today that they are starting a new poll where Star Wars fans and collectors pick which figure is made.  This time, however, the poll is not for the long-running 3.75-inch line of figures, but for Hasbro’s newer 6-inch Black Series figure line.

To make it even more exciting, all Star Wars characters are eligible (except those from the unreleased The Force Awakens movie).   With that statement Hasbro has given fans perhaps their only chance to get a 6-inch action figure based on the Star Wars comics and novels that were removed from canon and put into the “Legends” category.  Of course, all characters from the films, major or minor, would also be given consideration.

Hasbro has confirmed to Star Wars Action News any character is eligible, including the long-desired Tonnika Sisters from A New Hope, Vlix from the 80s Droids series, and even Lumpy and Ackmena (Bea Arthur) from The Star Wars Holiday Special!

Also of note:  if the chosen character is from the Star Wars animated series Rebels or The Clone Wars the figure would be done in a realistic style consistent with the Black Series line’s look.

This year’s Fan’s Choice poll is being run by various Star Wars collecting sites, including Venganza Media’s own Star Wars Action News.  Before June 30th each participating site will submit to Hasbro their Top 5 list, with the #1 character getting 6 points, the #2 character 5 points, #3 character 4 points, and so on.

From the compiled lists from all the sites the character with the highest number of points will be immortalized in plastic–and Hasbro will reveal which character was chosen during their San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 10th.

Star Wars Action News is handling this with two rounds of voting.  First, they have opened a Figure Nomination thread in their forums.  In that post fans can free-form enter any characters they want.  That phase will be open until June 25th.  Then on the 25th a second poll will be opened where each fan can vote on the one figure they want most.  That poll will close on June 29th and the top five figures submitted to Hasbro on the 30th.

Begin your voting now!  Head to the Star Wars Action News forums and nominate your favorite character for the Black Series 6-inch line!

You wouldn’t want to go to Six Flags with Michael Crichton!  In 1990 the author wrote Jurassic Park–a story of a theme park where dinosaurs run amok.  And nearly two decades earlier Crichton also wrote and directed Westworld – a story about a fantasy theme park staffed by robots who rise up and kill their human masters.  The story is a clear template for the later dinosaur tale, and was a hit movie that influenced many later works including James Cameron’s Terminator.  Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob have gone to Westworld and if you donate to Now Playing you can take the ride with them!

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – for Annual Subscribers

It seemed Indiana Jones had hung up his hat and whip for good after 1989’s Last Crusade, but in 2008 Ford dusted off the leather jacket for another adventure in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.   The new movie also featured Shia LaBeouf as the young greaser Mutt Williams, and Karen Allen returning to the series as Marion.  Despite Spielberg and Lucas back behind the camera the film is widely derided and even launched the phrase “nuke the fridge.”  Is the hate undeserved, or should Jones have been buried in the warehouse with the Lost Ark?  Join Stuart, Jakob, and Arnie to find out!

Raiders of the Lost Ark – for Annual Subscribers

Individually Steven Spielberg and George Lucas were Hollywood’s two most popular filmmakers.  When they joined forces it seemed a hit was guaranteed with Raiders of the Lost Ark.  But this was no science fiction epic; Raiders was a period piece about an archaeologist racing Nazis to discover a religious relic.   The film cemented Harrison Ford as a star, launched a film franchise, and maintains its popularity to this day.  What makes Raiders of the Lost Ark such a classic?  Donate to Now Playing and you can join Stuart, Arnie, and Jakob and find out!

Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park – for Annual Subscribers

Kiss was unstoppable in the 1970s.  Sold out concerts, action figures, comic books, and a Kiss Army that spanned the world.  They were metal’s answer to The Beatles, so it just makes sense to make them stars of a movie, right?  Turning the rockers into superheroes, Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park stunned audiences when it aired as an NBC movie of the week…but perhaps for the wrong reasons.  With this special “Easter Egg” review from Now Playing you can listen to find out why!

Pre-Order Alert: Hot Toys War Machine from Avengers: Age of Ultron

Hot Toys - Avengers Age of Ultron - War Machine Mark II Collectible Figure_PR9

For Iron Man 3 a number of collectibles were made showing Iron Man’s pal War Machine in his more metallic suit, but in editing only the Iron Patriot was shown.  Even Hot Toys released that version of the War Machine armor.

Do you think Don Cheadle looked at the gray War Machine armor made for Iron Man 3 and said, “Next time, baby!”?  Well, that time is now!

Now, for Avengers: Age of Ultron the War Machine is back and he’s in his classic colors!  But…there are some subtle differences between the suit designed for Iron Man 3 and the one shown on screen in Age of Ultron.  So while you may have a Hot Toys figure really close to this one–unless you pre-order this new figure from Hot Toys you don’t have the Age of Ultron armor!

And to add to the mix, this figure is only being offered through a partnership between Hot Toys and Sideshow Collectibles as a Sideshow exclusive figure!  (It’s about time we got one stateside after having to hunt for so many overseas variants).  If it’s anything like the last exclusive armored Avenger offered by Sideshow, the Stealth Armor Iron Man, it is bound to sell out fast too!

Plus this is part of Hot Toys’  MMS Diecast Series which the collectible figures are made of diecast material, and realistically designed to look even more like the armor as it appears in the film.  You heard our glowing review of Iron Patriot on Marvelicious Toys, now it’s time for War Machine to get that same love.

The movie-accurate War Machine Mark II Collectible Figure is crafted with great details and based on the image of Don Cheadle as James Rhodes/War Machine Mark II in Avengers: Age of Ultron. It features a highly detailed head sculpt, metallic black and dark silver colored armor with decals, LED light-up functions, rotatable machine gun, and a specially designed Avengers: Age of Ultron figure stand.

Gear yourself up for this super exciting film and expand your Avengers: Age of Ultron collection with this diecast collectible figure as “War Machine rocks”.

Hot Toys – MMS290D10 – Avengers: Age of Ultron 1/6th scale War Machine Mark II Collectible Figure Features:

– Interchangeable helmeted head with LED light-up function (white light, battery operated)

Now Playing hosts talk Indy, Crichton and more

Dr. Jones prepares to introduce villain Mola Ram to Kali.

Dr. Jones prepares to introduce villain Mola Ram to Kali.

Twice a year, Now Playing Podcast holds a pledge drive, offering bonus shows as a “thank you” to listeners who support independent podcasting. This spring, hosts Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob will be reviewing the Indiana Jones films and “Goonies” for Silver Level donors, and the “Westworld” and “Jurassic Park” series’ from novelist Michael Crichton at the Gold Level.

Jakob: Indiana Jones has been requested by many, many listeners for a while. It’s always exciting getting to talk about iconic films; to get into the technical side that makes them more than just a “cool” movie, but true historic cinema.

Arnie: It’s been discussed as long as we’ve been doing Retrospective Series’. I always vetoed it, not wanting to end on a lousy film — and one I’d reviewed in the early days of Now Playing to boot.

Stuart: Lucas and Ford would tease the possibility of an Indy 5, but I never believed it was imminent.

Jakob: We found a way to end [the retrospective] — not on Crystal Skull — but on another Spielberg production about hidden treasure and booby traps that will hopefully wrap this series up more positively.

Stuart: It had been so long since I’d seen most of the Indy movies, I really was looking forward to re-experiencing it through adult eyes.

Arnie: I haven’t seen Crystal Skull since theaters–and never wanted to again!

Jakob: I do have a story for the podcast about meeting someone who had only seen Crystal Skull, which brought a unique perspective.

Stuart: [Arnie and Jakob] say they could quote every line from Raiders. I only remembered it in fragments… how did that monkey eating the poison date tie in with melting Nazis? I was excited to have a loved series on the docket.

Yul Brenner as the Gunslinger in "Westworld."

Yul Brenner as the Gunslinger in “Westworld.”

The inclusion of Michael Crichton’s “Westworld” and “Futureworld” for Gold Level donors comes as HBO prepares to debut a JJ Abrams and Jonah Nolan series adaptation of the films, which tell the now-familiar story of chaos at a futuristic theme park. “Westworld” was released in 1973, while the sequel arrived three years later. The concept was also adapted into a 1980 television series, “Beyond Westworld.”

Stuart: They seemed like the right films to add to the four Jurassic Park’s to make it Gold Level.

Arnie: That was Stuart’s esoteric pick, but it makes sense as a tie-in to Jurassic Park. Both are theme parks run amok, brought to us by Michael Crichton.

Stuart: I don’t think I ever read a review of Jurassic Park in 1993 that didn’t mention Crichton’s Westworld as an influence.

Jakob: They’re not films I’m familiar with, but that’s one of the joys of Now Playing — getting the opportunity to watch movies that haven’t hit your radar.

The park is open.

The park is open.

Although “Jurassic Park” remains the most successful adaptation of a Crichton novel, there have been more than one dozen films based off his work. Crichton has also received writing credits for numerous screenplays, including 1996’s “Twister.” However, Now Playing’s Spring Donation Series may be the only time films based on his novels are reviewed on the show.

Arnie: Given that we’re doing Jurassic Park as a donation series I think we can rule out a full Crichton retrospective. It would be unfair to put “All Crichton other than Jurassic” on the main feed while Jurassic Park is locked in the vault. I don’t see Rising Sun and The 13th Warrior as big draws for a future donation drive.

Stuart: I agree with Arnie that it’s no longer a possibility as a franchise. But who’s to say a one-off of Twister or Congo might not appear when you least expect it.

Jakob: The only way I’m going to watch Twister again is if we do a “really stupid natural disaster movies” retrospective, with the likes of Volcano, Dante’s Peak, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012. And I don’t see that happening. So, no, I’m not interested.

The first episode in the Spring 2015 pledge drive — “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — will be released to donors on April 17. Details can be found on the Now Playing Podcast website

Save Film Threat Magazine!

SaveFilmThreatFilm Threat Magazine is undergoing a millennial makeover!

Back in the early 1990s, there was no better way to get the lowdown on the thriving world of independent cinema than Chris Gore’s funny, fearless zine.  Film Threat was instrumental in educating movie fans on future cult classics and breakout art movies that never played my small town multiplex.  While so-called entertainment rags People and Premiere focused exclusively on heartthrobs and overexposed Hollywood blockbusters, Gore’s subscribers were among the first to read about emerging festival talent like Quentin Tarantino, Richard Linklater, and Robert Rodriguez.

I lost track of Film Threat after graduating film school, and the publication migrated away from paper-and-ink circulation to a popular website.  Thanks to Now Playing’s own Kickstarter campaign, I’ve learned about an exciting new opportunity to see my beloved news source return.

Film Threat is over a week into a 30 day Kickstarter campaign designed to re-launch their brand.  Founder Chris Gore promises revenue will be used to build a new website that will house podcasts, a web series, and over 80,000 articles.  A phone app is also in the works.

Gore and his writers are great at crafting snarky and passionate film analysis – a formula I’ve sought to emulate whenever I record Now Playing episodes.  And I still dig up back issues of the mag whenever I research an obscure installment of a franchise – their in-depth cover story on Roger Corman’s FANTASTIC FOUR was essential in being able to put that disaster into a proper context.

I will be happy to help out my old friend Film Threat when payday comes around this week, and wish Gore and company much success in their plans to tackle the ever-expanding world of independent cinema.   All the details about the campaign can be found at this link.   https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thatchrisgore/save-film-threat-and-bring-back-dvduesday

200232-black-cat-003

This is one Black Cat you want to cross your path!

It’s been quite some time since Sideshow Collectibles has released a new statue from their J Scott Campbell Spider-Man collection.  But now, almost a year since Spider-Man himself went for order, comes the 4th statue in the series — Black Cat!

This statue is based on a print Campbell has sold for several years at conventions, featuring Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, playing with her favorite ball of yarn–Spider-Man.  More, this statue comes in an exclusive edition with an extra accessory–a sculpted cat to rub up against Black Cat’s leather boot!

The statue stands 9-inches high with Black Cat in her crouching pose, and weighs about 8 lbs.  It is expected to ship the second quarter of 2016.

The Campbell Spider-Man statues have had astoundingly high edition numbers…and all sold through!  The Mary Jane comiquette had 6,000 pieces ship–and is sold out!  The exclusive edition of Spider-Man sold out as well.  The other statues, Gwen Stacey, Spider-Man, and the alternate Spider-Man in Classic Colors have all gone back to pre-order status after shipping!  It’s astounding, but these statues have been some of the most popular Marvel items from Sideshow Collectibles in years!

So what are you waiting for?  Head to Sideshow Collectibles and order yours now!

Star Wars Episode VII: The Toys Awaken

maxresdefault

Star Wars Action News forum member Niklab wrote in with an interesting find–the Target DCPI information for loads of Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys!

He has broken down the toys into categories based on descriptions, and you can find the item stock number, Target price, and more below!

Some observations:

1)  The good news is Star Wars figures will continue to be in 3.75-inch scale!  After Hasbro experimented with 2.5-inch figures for Guardians of the Galaxy and the current Avengers: Age of Ultron toy lines, Star Wars fans feared Hasbro may follow suit with the Episode VII line.  But there are no signs of 2.5-inch toys and, in fact, there are even vehicle assortments in the 3.75-inch scale!

2)  The 6-inch toy line will continue, which seemed a given with Hasbro’s push for that new scale of collector-oriented figure.  Still, it is nice to have confirmation.

3)  Though we will have 3.75-inch figures, odds are collectors spoiled by the super-articulated figures released between 2005 and 2013 will be disappointed.  The Black Series 3.75-inch line has a MSRP of $9.99 and many Target stores sell them at $12.99 or above.  To see these new 3.75-inch figures priced at $7.99 indicates they will likely have greatly reduced articulation (though perhaps more than 4 points, as these are more expensive than the current “Mission Series” figures).

From role-play toys to Micro Machines and Die Cast vehicles, there will be something for everyone to collect–and likely too much for any one person to afford!

Read on for all the details!

LISTENERS POWER VENGANZA KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN TO HISTORIC FINISH

Fans pledge more than $115,000 to fund company’s first publishing project

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Springfield, Ill. – March 19, 2015 – Proving once again that they are among the most loyal and loving fans in the world, the listeners of Venganza Media’s Now Playing Podcast rallied together in unprecedented fashion to fund the company’s first publishing project, Underrated Movies We Recommend.

A 30-day Kickstarter campaign – which began with a $40,000 goal – ended Thursday having amassed $115,482 in pledges from 1,209 listeners. They gave generously throughout the campaign and many even increased their pledges to keep the momentum going down the stretch. With each milestone reached, the Now Playing Podcast hosts added rare and exclusive rewards as a “thank you” to donors supporting the campaign and the show.

“As an independent show with no sponsors we have always relied on our listeners,” said show creator and host Arnie Carvalho. “The amount of support we’ve received has floored all of us. But I shouldn’t be shocked, I’ve always known Now Playing has the best fans in the world.

Originally conceived as an e-book, Underrated Movies We Recommend is now on track to be released in hardcover and audio format in early 2016. The audiobook became a major draw in the closing days of the campaign, as listeners jumped at the chance to hear the four hosts discuss their favorite undiscovered and underappreciated films. Behind the scenes, the hosts are already deep into the writing process, and they have already revealed nearly half of the 125 Underrated titles they’ll be reviewing in the book on Facebook and Kickstarter. All of this is happening while Now Playing Podcast is in the middle of its Fast & Furious retrospective series, covering the entire series on the show’s main feed.

Poll lets you choose film for Now Playing Podcast

Snip20150218_141

The poll will close Feb. 27.

Tuesday’s live episode of Now Playing Podcast featured plenty of bonus material for fans, including the chance to choose a movie for the hosts to review in the coming weeks.

A poll on the Now Playing website gives listeners the option to choose from Babadook, Wes Craven’s Shocker, Sinister, John Carpenter’s They Live, and The Usual Suspects.

Carpenter’s 1988 sci-fi actioner (starring Rowdy Roddy Piper!) immediately took the lead in early voting, but fans of Craven’s Shocker countered with a #VoteShocker hashtag on social media. As of Wednesday morning, They Live still led, followed by The Usual Suspects.

The poll closes Feb. 27, and the winning selection will be announced during the March 3 review of 2 Fast 2 Furious.

Listeners who don’t have a favorite in the poll can still choose a film for Now Playing Podcast to review by supporting the show’s Kickstarter campaign.

In Jupiter Ascending, the newest film directed by The Wachowskis, a woman finds out the ordinary life that bores her so is just an illusion and that she is actually a reincarnated queen.  From that plot and the trailers this new sci-fi epic appeared to tell a story not too far removed from The Wachowski’s beloved film The Matrix.  Yet the film sat unreleased for some time, and then its release date was moved from Summer, 2014 to February, 2015–a sign that the studio lacked confidence in the film.  But now Jupiter has ascended.  Should you take the red pill or the blue pill on this new mythology?  Thanks to your donation to Now Playing  you can listen to Stuart, Arnie, and Jakob’s review and find out!

New Funko POP! Vinyl Exclusives Coming to Walgreens

IMG_4200

This month saw the first Walgreens Marvel Comics exclusive figures in the Funko POP! Vinyl figure line.  Now it looks Walgreens will be getting POP! Vinylu exclusives from another Disney licensee–Star Wars!

A Bothan spy contacted us this morning with information from the Walgreens stock system showing four upcoming items all listed as “POP! STAR WARS EXCLUSIVE”

This revelation is no surprise.  At the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con International Walgreens announced 6-Inch figure exclusives–the first was Agent Venom in Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line.  This was quickly followed by the Prototype Boba Fett in Hasbro’s Star Wars 6-inch Black Series figure line.  That Funko would follow a similar pattern–release four Marvel POP! exclusives first, then four Star Wars POP! exclusives, makes sense.

The Walgreens exclusive Marvel POP! Vinyls are just now starting to appear in Walgreens stores.  With both Black Outfit Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 packed 1 per case eBay prices have soared as high as $60.  Star Wars collectors should brace themselves for similar short-packed figures.

More information on this will likely be revealed at Toy Fair International, taking place this coming weekend in New York City.  Star Wars Action News and Marvelicious Toys will both be covering the events, so be sure to follow them through social media for the latest updates on all Star Wars and Marvel toys!

New Podcast – Marvelicious Toys Issue 135: I Want to Hold Hulk Hand

coverFor Captain America the shield is more than defense–it’s a symbol of America and taking “the American Dream and make it an American reality.” Now, nearly 75 years after first appearing in Captain America Comics #2, Captain America and his shield serve as a symbol, both in the Marvel Universe and in the real world, of strength, idealism, and patriotism. And as seen in The Avengers and the two Captain America movies, it’s pretty darn cool as well!

In 2014 eFX Collectibles’ gave fans their chance to be like Stephen Colbert and put Captain America’s shield on their walls with their Avengers Captain America Shield Prop Replica. A full scale collectible cast from the original molds of the prop used in The Avengers, this eFX prop had been teased for years. Even with an edition size of 1,500 it sold out quickly. But the Marvelicious Toys hosts have one in-hand and review it on this episode!

Also on this show, a quick review of the new Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors figures from Hasbro, a look at the new Thanos and Captain America figures from Hot Toys, and a preview of the new LEGO UCS LEGO set.

Now Playing Podcast to open vault during live ‘Kingsman’ show

Snip20150202_24

It’s true. It’s happening. There’s photographic proof.

Now Playing Podcast officially announced Monday that it will open the vault containing its previously released donation shows on February 17, following its first-ever live review of Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Snip20150202_26

One listener will win the entire donation library, but they must be present for the live show and follow-up Q&A, starting at 9:30 p.m. EST.

Inside the vault — which I imagine is welded shut and bound in human flesh like the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis – are the precious few retrospective series’ that Now Playing Podcast offers listeners during its bi-annual pledge drives.

The Alien series, Child’s Play, Jaws, Evil Dead, Exorcist, Poltergeist – that’s not even half of what you’ll find inside. But the hosts promise all will be up for grabs.

Snip20150202_23

Now Playing Podcast launched its first pledge drive in 2010 with reviews of the five Child’s Play movies (with a sixth film added to the series in 2013). Host Arnie Carvalho has credited listener support for keeping Now Playing on the air, and in return the hosts have continued to up the number of shows offered per donation drive (a total of 13 were available in Fall 2014) while sprinkling in secret shows like Garbage Pail Kids and Troll.

It’s been more than two years since Now Playing Podcast gave listeners a chance to loot the vault.

So why now? And what’s the catch?

“We’re not opening them for new donations,” Carvalho said. “What that means… what we are doing… we’ll reveal during our live show.”

Although just one fan will win it all, the host added that it won’t be the only opportunity to grab the long-sought donation shows.

“Hopefully 2015 will be Now Playing’s biggest year yet,” he added. “And giving listeners a chance to get these old podcasts is just the beginning.”

This issue – what happens when Dr. Strange possesses the Punisher? Meet the Sorcerer EXTREME! Only Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Hulk and Ghost Rider of this land can track this terrible two-in-one down. And things are going to get messy! Then, what happens when M.O.D.O.K. recruits every M.O.D.O.K. ever from across Battleworld for his evil scheme. I’ll give you a hint – F.I.G.H.T.!

Walgreens Exclusive Funko Pop Vinyl Figures Hitting Stores

Walgreens Exclusive Funko Pop Case Assortment
Is your spider sense tingling?  If so that could be because you’re in danger of not finding one of the Walgreens exclusive Spider-Man Pop! Vinyl figures!

Last year Funko announced an exclusive wave of their hit Marvel Comics Pop! Vinyl Figures would be coming to Walgreens stores.  Those figures are now hitting, and we have an exclusive look at the case assortment.  Each Walgreens will be getting:

  • 3 Punisher Pop! Vinyl Figures
  • 3 Venom Pop! Vinyl Figures
  • 1 Spider-Man 2099 Pop! Vinyl Figure
  • 1 Black Suited Spider-Man Pop! Vinyl Figure

As Spider-Man is most-recognized, and most profitable, superhero in the world it is odd that his figure would be the scarcest.

This picture comes to us from a Hydra spy who confirmed this case is straight from Funko and not repacked in this ratio by Walgreens’ own warehouse.

In addition to Spider-Man fans, the Pop! Vinyl figures are sought out even by non-comic fans.  The cute appearance of figures has created its own fandom with collectors trying to buy every Pop! Vinyl Funko releases, and some of the rarest have sold for over $250 on eBay.

Will these Spider-Man figures be that rare, or will future case assortments ship more of these wall-crawling varients?  Follow Marvelicious Toys on Facebook and @MarveliciousToy on Twitter to stay abreast of all the latest Marvel collecting news!

Hasbro Not Responsible for Star Wars and Super Hero Action Figure Price Jump

10917078_10153007694158909_1251575289490984922_n 12.99 Batman 1299 figures

Action figure collectors across the country recently took to Facebook and Twitter to vent their frustration over the rising cost of action figures.

At Target, one of the three largest toy sellers in the US, action figure prices recently took a $3 jump.  Hasbro’s Star Wars 3.75-inch Black Series figures as well as Hasbro’s 3.75-inch Marvel Infinite Series figures went from $9.99 to $12.99 at most Target locations, with some other stores going even as high as $15.29.

Collectors were worried that this price would soon be mirrored by other top toy sellers including Walmart and Toys ‘R’ Us.

We reached out to Hunter PR, the public relations firm which represents Hasbro, to ask about this price increase.  When I asked if the Suggested Retail Price of the action figures was going up, the response was very clear:  “The price change was instituded by the retailer and not at the manufacturer level.”

This was widely speculated to be the case as other action figures, including Mattel’s DC Multiverse line, had gone up in price as well.  That being said, it is nice to have confirmation that the price of action figures, which has gone up 100% in the past 10 years, is not taking yet another manufacturer-instituted jump.

Now we can only wait and see if Target will reduce the price back to its previous level to stay competitive in the action figure market, or if the other toy retailers will raise prices to match Target’s newly increased profit margin.

Uncle Milton - Star Wars Science - The Force Trainer II

Uncle Milton, creator of the innovative Star Wars™ Science brand of toys, is getting ready to challenge aspiring Jedi in a different way. This time, Uncle Milton will be bringing the popular artificial intelligence game of knowledge, 20Q, into the world of Star Wars with the Jedi Holocron. Holocrons are artifacts that hold an indeterminable amount of knowledge, so what better way to bring the Holocron into our world, than with 20Q. Even better, Star Wars™ fans can be part of the creation of this new Star Wars™ Science Jedi Holocron! Just visit 20q.net, click on the Star Wars logo and follow the instructions. Think of any person, place, or thing based on all 6 Star Wars movies and TV series and 20Q will try and guess what you’re thinking. See if you can outsmart the Jedi Holocron! The more times you play, the smarter the artificial intelligence of the Jedi Holocron will become. Look for the Star Wars Science Jedi Holocron on store shelves beginning in Fall, 2015.

In addition, Uncle Milton is also releasing a new version of their very popular Star Wars Force Trainer.

In 2009, one of the most innovative Star Wars toys of all-time was launched–The Force Trainer. This incredible toy enabled fans of all ages to move and control an object with the power of their mind and quickly became a hit with Star Wars fans and the media worldwide. Just as the next generation of Star Wars movies is preparing to launch, Uncle Milton’s Star Wars Science brand is introducing The Force Trainer II: Hologram Experience. The Force Trainer II features new technology being unveiled at CES and gives Star Wars fans the opportunity to harness the power of their mind to move and control hologram images as they perform incredible Jedi feats from Star Wars movies.

With The Force Trainer II, you are the Jedi. Imagine that you could raise an X-wing from the Dagobah swamp just like Luke Skywalker, battle Darth Vader, or build your own lightsaber with just the power of your mind! These magical scenes are re-created through hologram images and a wireless headset with real brainwave sensors that read and interpret your levels of concentration. The more you focus, the more successful you are in moving and controlling the hologram image and successfully completing the Jedi challenge. The hologram images and Jedi challenges come through a companion app included with the purchase of the product and powered by the user’s tablet device which projects these holograms into the unique Jedi themed training base.

There are 10 different Jedi training levels through which fans can advance from Padawan to Jedi Knight to Jedi Master, with instruction and guidance from Jedi Master Yoda. Additional Jedi challenges will also be available for download on updated versions of the app as new Star Wars movies are released. The product is expected to hit retail stores in Fall 2015 with an estimated SRP of $119.99.

“We are very excited to unveil The Force Trainer II: Hologram Experience at CES,” said Ken Malouf, VP of Marketing & Product Management at Uncle Milton. “This toy captures the imagination of aspiring Jedi everywhere as they learn to use and control the power of their own concentration to activate fantastic Star Wars adventures. The combination of this advanced technology, compelling game play, and real science application makes for a truly unique product that fits the spirit of the Star Wars brand.”
