Soundtracks on Vinyl: The Hateful Eight

One of the draws to collect vinyl releases of movie scores and soundtracks is the large artwork for the film that accompanies it. These entries will review the vinyl record release of a film score/soundtrack from the music to the artwork, as well as the film…

The Movie

The Hateful Eight is a western about a bounty hunter played by Kurt Russell en route to deliver a wanted fugitive played by Jennifer Jason Leigh to the law when they take refuge in a log cabin during a snowstorm in Wyoming. The two are joined by six other strangers looking for sanctuary from the blizzard. But as the night proceeds, it becomes clear that some of the strangers have secretly planted themselves there to free the female criminal. A tense standoff proceeds as identities are discovered and the body count rises.

A big deal was made over the Ultra Panavision 70 ultra-widescreen format director Quentin Tarantino used to film The Hateful Eight. No small part of that hype was due to Tarantino himself doing a very limited 70mm roadshow screening of the film with extra footage.  However, the film underperformed at $55-million (U.S. box office) after his previous two films, Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, brought in over $100-million each domestically.

Men in Black II

In 2002 Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones returned to save the
world…again! With the stars back, much of the supporting cast,
and Barry Sonnenfeld again directing, it seemed like another
surefire hit. Yet the box office was down, critics were harsh, and

Cujo

From 1974 to 1982 Stephen King published 12 books, most of them
bestsellers. Yet only three movies were based on his writing during
that same period: Carrie in 1976, The Shining in
1980, and Creepshow in 1982. That all changed starting in
1983. In the next four years a total of thirteen movies based on
King’s works hit screens. The first movie in that deluge was
Cujo, based on King’s 1980 book about a mother and son
trapped by a rabid dog. Does Cujo keep to the quality of
the Kubrick, De Palma, and Romero films that came before? Listen to

Men in Black – A Podcast Preview

In the 1990s no one saved the world from aliens like Will Smith! In 1996 he piloted us to freedom in Independence Day, and for summer of 1997 he was doing it again as one of the Men in Black. With Tommy Lee Jones as his dry, experienced mentor, the two must save the world from an intergalactic war. Is this a film you should remember, or is a neuralizer the better option? Listen to this excerpt, and find out details how you can donate and hear the whole show!

Note: This podcast is not available for general download. The Men in Black Retrospective Series was made as a special “Thank you” for those Now Playing Supporters who donate between April 1 and July 31, 2016.

American Splendor

Harvey Pekar was an independent comic writer, a notorious talk show guest, and a general grump. And with the film American Splendor he added another title–movie star. Pekar himself and Paul Giamatti both play the author in the film that depicts Crumb’s start in comics, and his fight with cancer. It’s possibly the most down-to-earth comic book movie Now Playing has ever reviewed…but is it good? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

And after you listen to this review, listen to Jakob’s 2008 interview with Harvey Pekar.

Now Playing Podcast Host Jakob Interviews Harvey Pekar

pekar_hires_01This week Now Playing Podcast continues reviewing films based on DC Comics with American Splendor*, the biopic about the life of Harvey Pekar. Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob will be reviewing and analyzing this Academy Award winning film.

But before Jakob was an author and podcaster on Now Playing Podcast, he was host of Comicpocalypse — a Venganza Media podcast covering all areas of comic books.  On that show Jakob performed several interviews with comic creators. In 2008, the Comicpocalypse guest was Pekar in a two-part interview.

While Comicpocalypse ended later in 2008 and its shows are no longer online, we are proud to make available this two-part interview as an introduction to Now Playing’s movie review.

The Spirit (2008)

Frank Miller was given a director’s credit on Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City. With that film’s success Miller went on to direct his own feature film. The result was The Spirit, based on Will Eisner’s iconic comic book crimefighter. The movie’s visual style and tone strongly resembled Sin City but the reception didn’t match that earlier film. Is this film a Sin worth committing? Listen to find out!

STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE – A Trailer Breakdown

The trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here!  Believe it or not, this trailer has me more excited than any of The Force Awakens did. You can watch the full trailer, then read my thoughts below!

My immediate reactions as the trailer played: (click the images for larger views)

Ah, a semi-criminal rogue joining the rebellion. It worked for Han Solo and several stories in the abandoned EU. Very interested in seeing it on screen. Her name is Jyn Erso and she has a strong British accent, causing an immediate comparison to Daisy Ridley’s Rey. The actress is Felicity Jones, an actress best known for a strong turn as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything. She was almost Black Cat in Sony’s Amazing Spider-Man series, but her part was cut from that second film and the series is now rebooting. Instead, she’ll get her franchise role here. 1
The costumes for Rebel troops look amazing, as does the Yavin temple set. This environment I know so well from the 1977 Star Wars and it’s exciting to see here in new context.

Plus — GONK!

 2
They’re really putting that plexiglass green line prop to abundant use. First General Organa was behind it in all The Force Awakens posters, and now here. I don’t remember it being that big a part of the original trilogy–and the diagonal neon lines makes it look like Mon Mothma is at a dance club from Bad BoysSpeaking of Mon…  3b
3c
3a
Holy cow does this actress (Genevieve O’Reilly) look like the original actress from Return of the Jedi (played by Caroline Blakiston)! This is the same actress who played Mon Mothma in Revenge of the Sith but the look is much closer here. But does she only have one gown during the Galactic Civil War? (I kid–the outfit helps reinforce who this character is from Jedi memories.  5
Classic Stormtroopers. I figured there had to be some, but it’s awesome to see them on screen again. And Jyn kicks butt!  4
4b
Lens flare! Nothing but lens flare!

J.J. may not be directing, but the green neon screens, lens flare, his impact is felt.

 7
A Star Destroyer! My geek excitement meter just hit a 7 out of 10!  8
Wait…it’s in front of the Death Star? Up that geek meter to 8 out of 10!!And they’re installing the sensor dish. Awesome. It seems very plug-n-play. Good interface design, those Imperials.  9
Holy crap — a new, bad-ass Imperial. The white outfit…is that a Grand Admiral? Pity he’s not blue skinned. With the hair I wonder if it’s Tarkin, who must be in this film somewhere, but the outfit is wrong. The actor is Ben Mendelsohn. He’s been acting for over 30 years, but I’ve only seen him in a couple roles and can’t place him without rewatching.  10
Forest Whitaker as an ally for Jyn. I love Whitaker, from Good Morning, Vietnam to Species to Phone Booth and many roles in between. Nice to see a “name” actor in the film, but I want to know more about him.  11
A new type of stormtrooper. A flametrooper for the Galactic Civil War? I like the black armor, but I do wonder why these troops were never seen in the Original Trilogy (a continuity error each new movie will introduce I’m sure).  12
Now who is this samurai bad-ass? His outfit and fighting really hearkens back to Lucas’ original inspiration for Star WarsThe Seven SamuraiThis actor is Donnie Yen, a Hong Kong action star who I’ve seen only in Iron Monkey, Blade 2, and Shanghai Knights. I’m intrigued by his addition.  13
More black-clad Stormtroopers. I’ve long been a fan of the “Shadow Trooper” look, and really want to see these guys in action (as well as an explanation for their special suits).  14
Oh that white cape is going to be so dirty from that muddy water. Bad fashion choice — or stay on dry land  15
Whoosa what now? Royal guards…that means The Emperor. A black-hooded figure coming to kneel…it’s obviously not Vader (who we will likely see in Rogue One), but is it a new Sith? A dark jedi? (Could there be a traitor in Jyn’s midst? I’d tend to think so.)  16
Are those AT-ATs?  17
Holy crap, those ARE AT-ATs! Geek Meter at 10! I can’t wait to see these bad boys in action — my favorite vehicle from perhaps the entire Star Wars saga!  18
Are they trying to sell us Jyn as an Imperial? From the opening I think this is more likely some sort of disguise…or her origin story. I could be wrong.  19
IS IT DECEMBER YET?!?!?!?!?!?!  20

Marvel Madness — And the Winner Is……

2016 Marvel Infinity Gauntlet Madness Bracket - Finals

What a March Marvel Madness it has been! We started with 32 heroes plucked from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including films, TV shows, and Netflix. 29 single-elimination matches took place with you deciding the results in each case! Sure, you could have voted Howard the Duck beats Hulk, but the voters seemed to keep to the reality defined by the Marvel media.

There were close matches, like when Luke Cage beat Winter Soldier by 1 vote. And there were landslides, like when Hulk smashed Deathlok. But throughout there were fun match-ups that pitted friend vs friend. The full bracket with results is above.

And the end result came down to the two strongest heroes — Hulk vs Thor for the championship! And the contest wasn’t even close.  With 68% of the vote, the winner is……..

Hulk Wins

Hulk smashed his way through Deathlok, Black Panther, Iron Man, Punisher, and Thor to become the 2016 Marvel March Madness Champion! This green golliath truly was unstoppable in this mash-up of heroes! (Perhaps this is why Banner was sent away on a Quinjet in Age of Ultron as Civil War would simply be decided by Hulk).

Thanks from all of us at Now Playing Podcast and Marvelicious Toys to everyone who voted in any and all of these matches.  It was fun for us to see how the results went, and maybe next year we can do it again with new heroes like Dr. Strange, or perhaps with the villains — Iron Monger vs Abomination is a match I’d pay to see!

Finally, a special shout-out to Stephen Finley who wrote out narratives for each of the matches — and more often than not the vote followed his story! He posted several of them in our forums, and they’re a very fun read!

Finally, don’t forget to check NowPlayingPodcast.com in just a few weeks for our review of Captain America: Civil War, and join us biweekly at MarveliciousToys.com for the latest Marvel toy collecting news and reviews!

Thanks again for taking part, and EXCELSIOR!

The Spirit (1987)

When fans think of The Spirit they probably think of Will Eisner’s 1940’s comic book crimefighter. Or they may think of Frank Miller’s 2008 film adaptation of the same name. Only the hard core Spirit fans and ’80s trivia buffs would think of the film we’r

Now Playing Podcast to Deliver Summer of Sci-fi

Now Playing Podcast announced its Spring 2016 Donation Series last week, a lineup of film reviews bookended by two highly requested comedy franchises along with a motley crew of cult classics from the summer of 1986. The latter series, dubbed “Sci-Fi of Summer 1986” should appeal to some of the show’s longtime fans who have been lobbying for those films that they may have missed in theaters but grew up watching on USA “Saturday Nightmares” or Joe Bob Briggs’ “Monstervision.”

As is tradition, donors will get to choose between Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers.

Silver

The Silver Level series ($10 or more) features Will Smith in his prime, headlining Now Playing Podcast reviews of the Men In Black franchise, along with Independence Day and its upcoming sequel.

Gold

Screen Shot 2016-03-12 at 6.21.31 PM

“Invaders from Mars” ad from 1986.

The Gold Level series ($25 or more) is where things get really interesting. For the first time, the Now Playing hosts will dissect a series of non-franchise releases with no connection to one another: Critters, Tobe Hooper’s Invaders From Mars, SpaceCamp, Labyrinth (starring Jennifer Connelly and the late, great David Bowie), John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, and Night of the Creeps. While none were blockbusters in 1986, they still have their fans, most notably Big Trouble and Creeps, which listeners have long requested Now Playing review.

While there is no official Carpenter retrospective, the Big Trouble review will check off another title in the director’s filmography. The Now Playing hosts have previously reviewed Halloween, The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and They Live, with Christine somewhere on the show’s future calendar as part of the Stephen King retrospective. We can all cross our fingers for The Fog or Escape from New York someday, but in the meantime it’s more than a gift to have the director writing the foreword to Now Playing’s first book, “Underrated Movies We Recommend.”

Platinum

When the summer is in full swing, the donation series will focus on one of the greatest comedies of all-time, its pretty great sequel, and the controversial remake/reboot that arrives July 15. A Platinum Level donation of $35 or more will deliver all of the aforementioned reviews, and the Ghostbusters retrospective. The director of Bridesmaids and Spy helms the latest incarnation of the New York-based paranormal investigators and eliminators, and following a mixed reception to the first trailer, it will be fascinating to see if this new Ghostbusters can amass the kind of fan following the first films earned.

The Now Playing Podcast Spring Donation Drive runs from April 1 to July 31, with the first review scheduled for release on April 22.  Sign up now to get all of these bonus shows!

Watchmen

Watchmen was an acclaimed ’80s comic series. It helped legitimize comics as a literary medium, and remained a bestseller for over 20 years. Yet with its complex, nonlinear narrative, all attempts to adapt it to film had failed to launch. But in 2009 director Sack Snyder, fresh off his success on 300, used the same visual style to bring Watchmen to theaters. The result was not as highly-praised as the graphic novel, but is it worth a watch? Join Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart as they review the film version of Watchmen, including a comparison of all three different cuts released!

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

After the success of the X-Men superhero properties were in demand. But before hero teams like Justice League, Watchmen, and Avengers could assemble, there was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Sean Connery’s Allan Quatermain leads a cadre of literary figures including Tom Sawyer, Dr. Jeckyll, The Invisible Man, and others. The film’s reception, though, was anything but extraordinary with rumors this production ended the careers of both Connery and director Stephen Norrington. Is the film deserved of that reputation? Join our League of Extraordinary Movie Critics to find out!

Pre-Order Alert: Mezco’s One:12 Captain America (Spider-Man, Deadpool, and Red Skull Announced)

x800-2445

There was no contest.  Marvelicious Toys’ winner of “Best in Show” for the 2016 Toy Fair International was Mezco and their One:12 line of highly articulated 1/12th scale action figures.

Now the first Marvel Superhero in that figure line is available for pre-order:  Captain America

This new figure line has these classic Marvel characters in their comic book incarnations. But with what Mezco calls “Hyper-realistic portraits”, 32-points of articulation, fabric uniforms with special silk screening applications, and sculpted accessories like belt, gloves, harness, and boots, this is a 6-inch figure like no other.

Plus the Captain America figure is loaded with accessories.  This first release has

  • Standard helmeted portrait
  • Unmasked Steve Rogers Portrait
  • Fists (L&R)
  • “Thumbs Up” hand (L)
  • Saluting hand (R)
  • Pointing hand (R)
  • Posing hands (L&R)

Gen 13

Created by comic book superstars J Scott Campbell, Jim Lee, and Brandon Choi, Gen 13 was Wildstorm Comics’ risque Gen-X version of the X-Men. After only a few years in publication the series’ success led to Buena Vista creating this animated feature, starring voice actors Mark Hamill, John de Lancie, John de Lancie, and Flea. But before the movie could see release Wildstorm was bought by DC Comics, and Buena Vista parent company Disney forever shelved this action cartoon. Is this a gem that deserves its day, or a mercy killing a’la Corman’s Fantasic Four? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob for this review to find out!

Monogram Key Rings Unlock Marvel Comics Cuteness

cache_640x480_Uploads_2015-12-06_Monogram International_3D Figural Key Chains_Series 4_MODOK_Monogram International - Foam 3D Key Chain - Series 4 - MODOK - 28One of the greatest joys I have in life is blind bagged collectibles. I enjoy the surprise and suspense of not knowing which character is in that little opaque package. The hunt for the chase figures, and the satisfaction of knowing that I completed the series are great feelings. These are all amplified if the item is amazingly cute. Nothing is better than a tough super hero or villain transformed into a cute and cuddly little being. That’s why Monogram International’s 3D Foam Key Rings are my latest obsession.

I first stumbled across these at my local bookstore. I liked the art on the package and it was blind bagged so I bought a couple. As soon as I opened them, I knew I had to get more. I was blown away by the each character and how uniquely cute they were. The first one I opened that day was Hulk. I loved how he looked like a shrunken version of Marvel’s Green Goliath. His little mop of black hair and little outstretched arms had me. I opened the rest of them and immediately went back and bought more.

These key rings are simply adorable!  They have a rotund quality, and stubby little appendages, making them look like baby versions of their characters, and this only adds to the cuteness. The key rings are fully formed like action figures, but they are not articulated. What really makes these stand out is the fact that they are all different sculpts. These aren’t the same body painted a number of different ways. The heads have personality and are unique to the character.  Some have little weapons they are holding, other shave capes like The Collector, and Ghost Rider has his signature flames on his head.

Monogram covers a wide array of characters in each series as well. Series 1 covered the standard characters with Avengers and a portion of the Guardians of the Galaxy team.  In later series we see Falcon, Ant-Man, Luke Cage and even MODOK. Monogram even delves into Secret Wars territory, tying into that recent crossover event. There are also some chase or “exclusive” figures. Sometimes they are a color variant like gold Thanos in the Secret Wars series or the gray Deadpool variant in Series 3. Chase figures are typically packed in lesser numbers for each case and as a result, harder to find.

cache_640x480_Uploads_2015-12-06_Monogram International_3D Figural Key Chains_Series 4_The Collector_Monogram International - Foam 3D Key Chain - Series 4 - The Collector - 2The only problem I have encountered with these is what to do with so many key rings! I have solved this problem by trading my extras or using them as intended, as key rings.. They also make great zipper pulls for backpacks. I have a collection of them and I am keeping them in various locations throughout collection as decoration. I have also found that hanging them on little hooks works well as they don’t stand up on their tiny feet. These are very versatile and can be displayed and used in many ways.

Packed in a silver bag with great artwork, these key rings can be found at various retail and comic store locations. They normally run around $5.99, which makes the price well worth what you are getting in that bag.

So what are you waiting for? Join the addiction and order some today.

Justice League of America

DC has had over 15 years of television dominance. From Smallville to Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, the heroes of DC Comics have come to life on the small screen. But not every attempt to bring the comics to life succeeded. Birds of Prey was cancelled early, and David E. Kelley’s Wonder Woman pilot was never aired at all. Neither was Justice League of America – a 1997 TV movie intended as a pilot for a CBS series. With The Flash, Green Lantern, The Atom, Martian Manhunter, Fire, and Ice sharing the screen, is this a lost gem? Join Now Playing’s Super Friends Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Pre-Order Alert: Drax the Destroyer from Hot Toys

Hot Toys - GOTG - Drax Collectible Figure_PR11

I like your figure. I’m keeping it.

Two years ago Hot Toys released their Guardians of the Galaxy figures. Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Drax were put up for pre-order shortly after the film’s 2014 release…but the question remained “Where’s Drax?”  He was shown at San Diego Comic-Con in 2014, but no orders were available, and questions to Hot Toys went unanswered.

People started to fear Drax would never come, put in the same category as the X-Men: First Class Magneto and Charles Xavier, and a handful of other never-released figures (Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Rhino will hopefully be added to that list).

But now Guardians fans can stop worrying! The Drax MMS Sixth Scale figure is now up for order!

The movie-accurate Drax collectible figure is specially crafted based on the image of Dave Bautista in the film, featuring the newly developed head sculpt, a newly developed muscular body with detailed sculpture of the character’s iconic tattoos, two styles of interchangeable pants, two blades, a rocket launcher, and a Guardians of the Galaxy themed figure stand.

Soundtracks on Vinyl: You’re Next

One of the draws to collect vinyl releases of movie scores and soundtracks is the large artwork for the film that accompanies it. These entries will review the vinyl record release of a film score/soundtrack from the music to the artwork, as well as the film…

The Movie

You’re Next tells the story of a well-to-do family getting together in their home in the woods for a reunion. However, none of them seem very excited to see each other. Their ambivalence soon turns to terror and fear as a gang dawning animals masks invades the home and starts killing off members of the family. But the intruders meet resistance when one guest displays a special set of skills for fighting back.

I’m not one for slashers, but the striking posters for the film caught my attention. Each poster featured the close up of one of the intruders in a plastic animal mask (the lamb mask always stuck out to me) with You’re Next written out as painted in blood. Even the title had a simplicity that immediately expressed the mood of the film (it’s appeal similar to the title of Simon Pegg’s fake Grindhouse trailer for Don’t).

THE HATEFUL EIGHT Arriving on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and On Demand March 29, 2016

Quentin Tarantino’s Academy Award Nominated THE HATEFUL EIGHT is now up for pre-order!  Get details about this release below:

BEVERLY HILLS, CA (February 17, 2016) – Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company are proud to present the home entertainment release of the eighth film by two-time Academy Award® winner Quentin Tarantino (Django Unchained, Pulp Fiction). Shot entirely on 70mm and featuring a Golden Globe® and BAFTA® award-winning score by Oscar® winner Ennio Morricone (Bugsy, The Mission) THE HATEFUL EIGHT “absolutely delivers on the sheer moment-to-moment pleasures fans have come to expect — from dynamite dialogue to powder-keg confrontations,” Peter Debruge, Variety. An explosive frontier mystery about eight strangers with one deadly connection, THE HATEFUL EIGHT will be available for digital download on March15, 2016 from Starz Digital before heading to  retail on Blu-ray™ Combo Pack ($39.99 SRP) and DVD ($29.98 SRP) from Anchor Bay Entertainment and On Demand March 29, 2016. Special features for THE HATEFUL EIGHT include two featurettes – “Beyond the Eight: A Behind-the-Scenes Look” and “Sam Jackson’s Guide to Glorious 70mm.”

“If you’re going to shoot your movie and release it in 70mm,

it’s really the way to go: twenty-four frames a second flickering through a projector,

creating the illusion of movement.” – Quentin Tarantino

Ultra Panavision 70 is the very rare and exceptional format that Quentin Tarantino and his team used to shoot THE HATEFUL EIGHT, the widest 70mm theatrical release in twenty years. Panavision’s unique anamorphic camera lenses capture images on film in an incredible aspect ratio of 2.76:1. Almost all films seen today are shot in ratios of either 1.85:1 or 2.39:1. Simply put, Ultra Panavision 70 provides an amazingly wide and more detailed image.

THE HATEFUL EIGHT marks the triumphant return to the genre for legendary composer Morricone (The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, A Fistful of Dollars). Nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Original Score, Morricone is back in the saddle after nearly four decades since last scoring a full-length Western. Additional Academy Award® nominations include 3-time Oscar® winner Robert Richardson for Best Cinematography and Jennifer Jason Leigh for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. THE HATEFUL EIGHT’s notorious all-star cast also boasts Oscar® nominees Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction), Kurt Russell (Silkwood), Emmy® nominee Walton Goggins (TV’s Justified), Demian Bichir (A Better Life) and Tim Roth (Rob Roy).

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in those parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Demian Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

Deadpool

This show description is guest written by Deadpool.

Oh, hello there! Deadpool here. It took ten years but I’ve finally got my own solo film! Now, I know I’m awesome, but even I’m shocked at how many box office records it broke. I have to give a lot of credit to the marketing, but the movie stars me, so it has to be awesome. The real question, though, is what Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob think. So whatever you’re doing — STOP! You need to just put your life on hold for the next 100 minutes and listen to this show to hear the guys review of my first movie!

Stardust

Neil Gaiman’s Stardust began in 1997 as a DC comic book fairy tale. In 1999 it was then published as an illustrated novel. Finally in 2007 it was adapted to the screen, directed by Matthew Vaughn. This story about a fallen star had its own star power with Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Robert De Niro, and Peter O’Toole. Is this yet another Vaughn comic adaptation worth checking out, or should it be burned ashes to ashes, Stardust to Stardust? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out as they return to their DC Comics Retrospective Series!

Princess Mononoke

Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki are highly regarded among anime fans. But none of their previous successes compared to 1997’s mythological Princess Mononoke. The film became Japan’s top-grossing film of all time. Disney’s Miramax Films even commissioned an English translation written by Neil Gaiman, voiced by stars including Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, and Billy Bod Thornton. Now join the Now Playing hosts as they travel into the forest for their first anime movie review!

Django Unchained – A Podcast Skit and Preview

To ’90s fans of Quentin Tarantino’s slick, cool crime films, the idea of him making a western might have sounded ludicrous. But when Tarantino finally delivered Django Unchained in 2012 it was a critical and commercial hit. Django became Tarantino’s highest grossing film ever, and earned a second Oscar for actor Christoph Waltz. Is this film really Tarantino’s best, or was it overrated? Masters of the Universe

Masters of the Universe was a beloved toy line and a hit ’80s cartoon. Its 1987 live-action movie, however, is not so fondly remembered. This Dolph Lundgren vehicle broke its movie studio but created new figures for kids to play with. Does this film have the power? Listen to find out!

Star Wars Episode VIII Release Date Pushed Back

star-wars-episode-8-127089Lucasfilm has announced that Star Wars Episode VIII has been delayed.

Originally scheduled to open May 26, 2017, the new release date is December 15, 2017.

The full press release is below.

Is this an attempt to recreate the nearly $2 billion earned by Episode VII: The Force Awakens? Does Disney not want Star Wars to compete with their other profitable space series — Guardians of the Galaxy? (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 5, 2017.)  Or did director Rian Johnson need more time to finish the film?

Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

Star Wars: Episode VIII to Open December 15, 2017

The release date for the next film in the saga is confirmed.

Today, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, originally scheduled for release in summer 2017, will now debut on December 15, 2017.

The move follows the extraordinary success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was the first Star Wars movie to premiere outside the traditional summer blockbuster window and smashed numerous records, including biggest domestic and global debuts of all time as well as the biggest domestic second and third weekends, en route to becoming the highest grossing domestic release of all time with over $861.3 million and the third biggest global release ever with $1,886.7 billion.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently in preproduction and will begin principal photography in London next month. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce and J.J. Abrams, Jason McGatlin, and Tom Karnowski will executive produce. Stay tuned for exciting updates in the coming weeks.

Hobo with a Shotgun

It started with a contest, a fan-submitted new “fake” trailer for Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double feature. It ended up, like Machete, being made into a full movie! The title sums up the film, but with Rutger Hauer cast as the titular Hobo can this be more than midnight-movie fare? Join Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart to find out!

The Hateful Eight – A Podcast Skit and Preview

Quentin Tarantino returned to the wild west for his 8th film — The Hateful Eight. Yet this new movie’s focus on a group of untrusting, violent men trapped in a cabin makes it also a return to the director’s style from Reservoir Dogs. Starring Samuel L. Jackson and Kurt Russel as two bounty hunters stranded in Wyoming, is Hateful Eight as good as both those earlier films…or it it worthy of your hate? If you make a donation of $25 or more to Now Playing before Jan 31, 2016, you can join Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart to find out!

Pre-Order Alert: Sideshow Collectibles’ Exclusive Captain Marvel Statue

marvel-captain-marvel-premium-format-feature-3004543

Sideshow Collectibles’ exclusive Captain Marvel Premium Format Figure is now up for order!  It stands 23-inches tall, showing Carol Danvers flying over a pile of wreckage. And if you order now you can get the exclusive version that has an swappable head showing her in her helmet!

While this is a gorgeous statue with marvelous color, I have to think this is the second statue Sideshow has put out that strains to justify its $500 price tag (the first being the Phoenix statue just last week!)  Yes, Sideshow is making their statues taller through use of vertical bases, but that is not enough to justify the extra $120-$140 over what they were charging two years ago. For a basic human-sized figure, and at the rate Sideshow is making them, it’s hard to justify Captain Marvel’s cost to any but the most hard-core Captain Marvel fan.

While I have severe FOMO on this one, I’m holding off in hopes of a discount down the road.

But if this is for you…Get your order in now at Sideshow Collectibles!

Machete Kills

The original film promised Danny Trejo would return as Machete, and that promise was kept! Machete Kills, released in 2010, boasts an even bigger line-up of stars than the original. Mel Gibson, Cuba Gooding Jr, Lady Gaga, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, and many more notable actors lined up to be featured in Robert Rodriguez’s over-the-top film. But did Machete kill our hosts with its jokes? And are they anxious for Machete Kills in Space? Listen to find out!

Pre-Order Alert: Two new Premium Format statues from Sideshow – Hulk and Dark Phoenix!

Capture

Like a super-villain attacking your wallet, Sideshow Collectibles has just put up for order two new Premium Format Figures:  Jean Gray’s Dark Phoenix and Hulk from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

These two statues are incredibly detailed, gorgeous pieces. But each carries with it a Hulk-sized price tag.

marvel-dark-pheonix-premium-format-3001481-02At $500 each, my number of Premium Format statue purchases will go down.  That said, I love, and I’ve already ordered, the Dark Phoenix statue. With her fiery base and the exclusive Jean Gray swappable head, plus such an iconic character from what is arguably Claremont’s best story arc, this one is (barely) worth the price.

However, I have to go the other way on the Hulk. It was the movie-themed Premium Formats that got me into Sideshow Premium Format Figures to begin with. Black Widow, Captain America, and even the Avengers Hulk Maquette were all amazing. However, this new Hulk is $750 — $100 more than the Avengers Hulk, and $200 more than the (still up for pre-order) comic-based Hulk Premium Format Figure announced last year.

I will admit, I could have been swayed into buying this Age of Ultron Hulk if, like Phoenix, the exclusive piece was amazing. Perhaps if they included a red-eyed Rampaging Hulk head, or a hand holding a piece of Iron Man armor. But no, the exclusive piece isn’t a must-have; to me it’s actually a turn-off. avengers-age-of-ultron-hulk-maquette-4002681-01

Hearkening back to the exclusive Legendary Scale Busts of previous years, this Hulk’s exclusive piece is a… nameplate. Now, I know I can choose not to display this piece since I already know who this character is, but it’s certainly not an enticement to pre-order.

I may still get Hulk pre-ordered once edition sizes are announced, but unless the edition size is 500 or less for the regular edition, I’ll be holding off and hoping for a Spooktacular deal on this overpriced piece in October, 2017.

I always appreciate anyone who’s ordering from Sideshow using our links and supporting Marvelicious Toys, but I find it hard to endorse a $750 version of a character (that MarvelToyNews.com pointed out…it looks like he’s bowling).

You can pre-order (and flex pay, as I did on Phoenix) both of these statues now:

Jean Gray’s Dark Phoenix

Hulk from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Machete

He knows the score. He gets the babes. He kills the bad guys. He is Machete! The character was originally seen in a joke trailer in the Rodriguez/Tarantino Grindhouse double feature. Then in 2010 that joke became a major motion picture. Did the film live up to the trailer’s promise? Listen to this episode of Now Playing to find out!

What’s on tap for Now Playing Podcast in 2016

Looking ahead to what will be the ninth year of Now Playing Podcast, I don’t know how you top 2015. In terms of franchises — Fast & Furious, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Mad Max, Star Wars — I’m not sure you can get any bigger. But, thanks to Hollywood, there’s never been a better time to be a franchise-focused podcast, and so the show will go on!

So, listeners will hear more Marvel, DC, and Star Wars in 2016, for sure. There are even Star Trek and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequels to look forward to. But the Now Playing Podcast calendar is constantly in motion, so here’s a peak at what you’ll definitely hear in the coming months.

January: The Grindhouse Universe

Screen Shot 2015-12-31 at 3.07.53 PM

Machete don’t podcast. But Now Playing does!

After taking listeners inside 2007’s Grindhouse experience, Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob will get even bloodier with two characters spawned from the film’s faux trailers: Machete and Hobo With a Shotgun. The former stars the great Danny Trejo, who finally got to headline his own film in 2010, and returned for a sequel, Machete Kills.

While not a runaway success, the first Machete was well received and, as this article correctly points out, was “tailor-made for the current political climate.” The sequel, released three years later, was not as well received, and that’s about all I’ll say about it. Oh, it had Mel Gibson as a villain.

The idea for Hobo With a Shotgun came from another Grindhouse trailer, but one you would have only seen if you saw the film in Canada. The feature length Hobo stars Rutget Hauer, who you might remember from 1992’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or possibly some other films.

January-February: Listener Requests

Our heroes, ladies and gentleman.

Our heroes, ladies and gentlemen.

Things will get really interesting in late January. That’s when we’ll hear reviews of listener requests made during 2015’s Kickstarter campaign to fund the show’s first book, “Underrated Movies We Recommend.” Listeners who supported the book at a certain level had the option to choose a film for the hosts to review, and the first one to be covered is 1987’s Masters of the Universe. It’s been almost 30 years and they still haven’t gotten a new He-Man movie made, so this is all we’ve got to hang onto folks. Just Dolph Lundgren and Courtney Cox and the lady who played Bruce Willis’ cheating wife in The Last Boy Scout as Teela. It’s a treasured memory, to some people.

If you’re looking to do some extra research before the Now Playing review, I recommend checking out Electric Boogaloo: the Wild Untold Story of Cannon Films. Cannon is the company that made the film, and Electric Boogaloo is a great behind-the-scenes documentary for film industry buffs. It’s on Netflix now, as is Masters of the Universe, coincidentally.

On the heels of He-Man, Now Playing will take up another listener request, a review of 1997’s Japanese anime epic Princess Mononoke.

February: Pool, Dead.

It's the part I was born to play baby!

It’s the part I was born to play baby!

The first Marvel character to make it to the screen in 2016 is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if he were it’s unlikely Disney would allow him to exist in a hard R film. Ryan Reynolds takes his fourth turn in a superhero flick with the part he was born to play — and played a version of in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the less said about that one the better.

February-March: DC Heroes Return

This happened.

This happened.

The first really big retrospective of 2016 will feature a cadre of characters that aren’t connected in the same cinematic universe, but they’re all part of Now Playing’s ongoing DC Comics series. Listeners can look forward to hearing the hosts talk Stardust, American Splendor, and the animated Gen 13; as well as the 2003 adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and the highly requested review of Zack Snyder’s Watchmen, which leads into the release of his Man of Steel follow up, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Also featured in this retrospective is a real treat for DC Comics fans, a review of 1979’s live-action Legends of the Superheroes TV specials. Decades before the CW made quality DC shows (and I’m hoping for more of the same from Legends of Tomorrow), NBC took Adam West and Burt Ward – more than a decade removed from Batman – and gave them headlining gigs in shows that also featured appearances by Green Lantern, Sinestro, Solomon Grundy, The Huntress, The Flash, Hawkman, and somebody named Ghetto Man, according to Wikipedia. Alas, two of DC’s biggest superheroes were missing from the lineup, because they were busy starring in blockbuster films and on CBS.

If you don’t know what Legends of the Superheroes is, just watch the intro on YouTube. The whole concept has a Star Wars Holiday Special feel about it, and I can’t wait to hear how this thing came about.

So that covers the first few months of Now Playing Podcast in 2016, and that’s just on the air. I can’t forget to mention that behind the scenes the hosts are furiously finishing their work on “Underrated Movies We Recommend.” It’s set to ship in the second quarter, and you can pre-order it now at the Now Playing Podcast website.

Maybe 2016 will be Now Playing’s biggest year after all.

Star Wars Holiday Special

“If I had the time and a sledgehammer, I would track down every copy of that show and smash it.” So said Star Wars creator George Lucas regarding the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special. The two hour CBS special reunited Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, alongside most of the original Star Wars cast. It also gave fans their first glimpse at the bounty hunter Boba Fett! So how can it be so hated, shunned, and disavowed? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

The Force Awakens

Lucas promised it would never happen. He repeatedly swore that Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was the last Star Wars film. Ever!

What a difference $4 billion makes!
Now, a decade since the last live action Star Wars film, Disney brings us The Force Awakens. The baton is being passed from the old trilogy’s heroes to a new group, played by Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac. But with the shadow of the prequels hanging over the series, does director J. J. Abrams’ new film fall to the dark side, or the light? The Clone Wars

In 2005 Revenge of the Sith was touted as the last Star Wars film. Ever. So fans were surprised and amazed in 2008 when the announcement came that Star Wars: The Clone Wars would be an animated, feature film. Originally developed as four episodes of the Clone Wars series, the footage was spliced together to feature length. With Samuel L. Jackson and Christopher Lee reprising their live-action characters, does this glorified TV pilot deserve its place as the final Lucas-era Star Wars movie? Join Arnie, Stuart, and Jakob to find out!

Kill Bill: Volume 1 – A Podcast Skit and Preview

Tarantino had dropped off the radar for six years after Jackie Brown, but in 2003 he returned to Kill Bill. This violent kung fu film was too big to be contained in one movie, so it was cut down the middle. It stars Uma Thurman as “The Bride,” a woman out for revenge on those who almost killed her. With her yellow outfit and her sword, did The Bride spear the hearts of our reviewers? If you support Now Playing you will get this bonus “thank you” gift. Pre-Order Alert: Ralph McQuarrie Boba Fett Statue

star-wars-ralph-mcquarrie-boba-fett-statue-200372-01

Sideshow Collectibles’ 18.5-inch Concept Boba Fett statue is up for pre-order!

Ralph McQuarrie’s conceptual drawings and paintings were instrumental in bringing George Lucas’ epic space saga to the big screen, envisioning the vast worlds of fantastic heroes, villains, vehicles and aliens that would come to be known as Star Wars!

Inspired by Ralph McQuarrie’s pre-production artwork for Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Sideshow Collectibles is proud to present Boba Fett!

One of the first new characters to be designed for The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett originally began as a super trooper, with a striking aesthetic inspired primarily by Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers. As McQuarrie worked closely alongside Star Wars Art Director Joe Johnston, the character evolved into the ruthless Mandalorian bounty hunter we know today. Capturing the spirit of these early explorations, Fett appears in his original all-white armor with two unique helmet designs, leaping into action over a base inspired by the Slave I. Reviewing a broad spectrum of McQuarrie’s imaginative designs for Boba Fett, Sideshow’s artists have translated his iconic artwork in a brilliant homage to a Star Wars that is both familiar, yet never was.

Now you can own an 18-inch statue of this classic concept armor. Check it out now at Sideshow Collectibles!

Previous McQuarrie collectibles, like eFX’s McQuarrie Vader helmet and the Gentle Giant McQuarrie mini-busts have sold out fast and now command a premium. Don’t delay, order your statue now!

Marvel Partners to Bring Statues, Clothes, and Toys for Adults in 2016

Marvel Comics Daredevil_Born AgainToday Marvel announced a new initiative to release products aimed at teen and adult collectors and fans.

In 2016 Marvel’s licensing partners will offer apparel, collectibles, action figures, and other items based upon their edgier properties, such as Netflix’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones television series. Items in this line will focus on characters from those series, including The Punisher (who will be featured in Daredevil Season 2, coming in 2016).

Not just television based, Marvel also said the edgier Marvel Publishing archives will be mined to support this release (such as the Daredevil: Born Again story).

With partners such as Kotobukiya, Sideshow, and Diamond Select named, fans can expect high-end statues. Plus Hasbro is specifically mentioned as releasing some of their popular Marvel Legends figures to tie into this initiative. Of course, Funko (the Energizer Bunny of marketing tie-ins) will also be offering several items.

Of concern is the lack of one key licensee — Hot Toys. Since 2008 that Hong Kong based company has produced 12 and 18-inch figures based on Marvel films. The figures are very popular and highly collectible, some selling out the first day they are offered. I know fans were hoping for Hot Toys versions of the movie Deadpool and the television series Daredevil. While Hot Toys may still offer such products in 2016, they are notable by omission in Marvel’s statement.

As of press time Marvel has not replied to our inquiries regarding Hot Toys’ participation in this campaign.

Also shocking is the inclusion of Marvel cult icon Deadpool. In early 2016 Hot Topic will launch a complete Deadpool campaign, which ties in with the Deadpool movie coming out in February. Historically Marvel has had rocky relations with Fox Studios, makers of the Fantastic Four, X-Men and Deadpool films. Merchandising for those properties has been limited, as stated by Hasbro’s Marvel Brand Team Manager Dwight Schultz, XM Studios, and others. Rumors came during San Diego Comic-Con that Marvel was lifting the restriction on Deadpool merchandise, and it has been confirmed in this release.

As an adult Marvel Comics fan and collector, I am extremely excited by this news. In 2014 and 2015 it seemed much of the Marvel content was being aimed at much younger fans, from single age to early teens. From changes to the Marvel comics to the Ant-Man film it seemed Marvel (or perhaps parent company Disney) was removing much of what made me a fan of the characters.

Additionally, as an X-Men enthusiast, it’s encouraging to see Deadpool back on the approved list for Marvel Licensing. While Deadpool merchandise has never been hard to find, as he is one of Marvel’s biggest break-out characters of the past 25 years, this specific push may indicate a more collaborative relationship between Fox and Marvel. (This may perhaps be borne out later in 2016 with Fox’s release of X-Men: Apocalypse).

While more details will certainly emerge during Toy Fair International in February, 2016, this is a promising revelation for grown-up fans of Marvel comics, movies, and television series.

Marvel’s entire press release is below.

MARVEL ENERGIZES ADULT FANS WITH NEW DAREDEVIL, THE PUNISHER, JESSICA JONES, AND DEADPOOL MERCHANDISE

Anti-Heroes and Vigilantes Inspire Dynamic New Product Line and Retail Promotions with Target, Walmart, Hot Topic, and Others

Glendale, Calif. (November 19, 2015) As fans continue to demand unique items to wear and collect from Marvel’s deep stable of characters, Marvel is rolling out its merchandising and retail plans for popular anti-heroes and vigilantes Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones and Deadpool.  This new development addresses a key Marvel strategy to tap into the Marvel vault and satisfy not only the fans of the major Marvel franchises — Avengers, Spider-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy — but also comic book fans and those watching Marvel’s new Netflix Original Series.

Utilizing new artwork that launched this past summer, the merchandise campaigns focus on images from the vast Marvel Publishing archive to embrace an edgier tone. The lines have begun rolling out in stores with larger launches planned for January 2016 targeting teens and adults. Activity will heat up later in 2016 with the debut of the second season of the critically acclaimed Netflix’s “Marvel’s Daredevil, which will include the first-ever live-action appearance of the Punisher on television.

The licensing program features a wide array of adult fan-focused product originating off of the wildly popular Marvel Comics publishing line, from apparel to collectibles and action figures. Fans will have the chance to build out full collections for the first time with collectibles from Diamond Select, Funko, Sideshow, Kotobukiya, and NECA coming to retail. Additionally, Hasbro will add Marvel Legends collector figures and Hot Wheels will unveil collectible die-cast vehicles next fall. Mad Engine, C-Life, Hybrid, Freeze, Fifth Sun, Silver Buffalo and Bioworld will each be launching a robust lineup of product including men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, footwear, bags, home goods, and drinkware. The merchandising programs will be rounded out with additional offerings including collector plush, stationery, consumer electronics, and novelties. And this assortment would not be complete without the collected Marvel Comics editions where these popular heroes originated.

At retail, best-in-class partners are working on extensive in-store and online support. Beginning in January, Target will feature a Funko display that will spotlight Daredevil, The Punisher and Deadpool collectible bobbleheads. In February, Hot Topic is launching an in-store and online Deadpool campaign that will include eye-catching signage, a homepage takeover, and social media posts. Other brick and mortar retailers including Walmart, JCPenney, Spencer’s, Party City, and Kohl’s will also provide in-store and online support. Amazon will expand on its toy and apparel offerings for the characters and CafePress is launching a dedicated Jessica Jones shop offering unique merchandise for both men and women.

“Our goal is to open our deep vault of characters and explore all opportunities to drive incremental revenue that extends beyond our core franchises and extends our reach to new consumer segments,” said Paul Gitter, senior vice president, licensing, Marvel at Disney Consumer Products. “The excitement that is brewing across the board from not just fans, but also the licensees and retailers, is overwhelming and we are looking forward to seeing the reaction to this awesome product lineup.”

The Phantom Menace

Star Wars returned to the big screen in 1999 with Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Sixteen years after Return of the Jedi the hype and anticipation were at manic levels. The result was the highest grossing Star Wars film of all time–and lots of internet hate. Now Arnie, Jakob, and Stuart travel to Naboo, Tattooine, and Coruscant to review The Phantom Menace. Is the hate deserved, or could no film live up to such high fan expectations? Listen to find out!
