Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Johnny Depp has long been a respected actor, but with 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl he became a box office draw. His performance as Jack Sparrow is one of Hollywood’s most iconic recent performances, alongside Sean Connery’s James Bond, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, and Harrison Ford’s Han Solo.

Pre-release rumors had the Black Pearl sinking down to Davy Jones’ locker, but instead it was the third biggest movie of 2003 and launched a major movie franchise. But can a movie based on a theme park ride really be, itself, a fun ride? If you donate to support Now Playing you can listen and find out!
